Born in Newmarket in Q4-1899 [Newmarket 3b:492] to Arthur and Louise NORMAN (née WEBBER) of Woodditton Road, Newmarket.
1901 census...Arthur [1] was living in Woodditton Road, Newmarket with his father Arthur [48],farm labourer, born Isleham; his mother Louise [42] born Isleham; brothers John FW [22] a cellarman, born London, Middlesex; Charles [20] a drayman born Isleham; Ezra [18] general labourer born Isleham and Albert [9] born Woodditton, and his sisters Rose [14]; Ethel [7] and Florrie [3] all born in Woodditton. 1911 census...Arthur [11] was at 13 Woodditton Road with his widowed father, sisters Ethel and Florrie, and brother John and Fred [9]. 2 children had died and his mother, (his father's 2nd wife) died in 1902. He was a farm labourer at the time of his enlistment The local press reported :- FUNERAL OF MR.A.W.NORMAN.- It is with much regret that we announce the death of Pte. Arthur W. Norman (son of Mr. Arthur Norman, Woodditton Road, Newmarket), which occurred on Monday, April 15th. at the New Military Hospital, Staffordshire. The deceased, who was only 18 years of age, caught a chill while carrying out his duties, and had been in the Army only a few months......" |

He died whilst still the Army, and died in the Military Hospital at Rugeley Camp. His death certificate (which has him as William Arthur NORMAN) gives pulmonary
tuberculosis and heart failure as the cause of death. No medal index card has been found as he had never served abroad. His is an unmarked
grave at Newmarket Cemetery in Section H - Old Ground. The actual grave number was not recorded. Arthur was not on the Debt of Honour of the CWGC, but steps were taken to rectify this. On 29th October 2011, thanks to the assistance of "In from the Cold", Arthur was accepted for inclusion on the Book of Remembrance by the CWGC. As his actual grave can not be identified a headstone has been placed in Newmarket Cemetery, in the top row nearest the Cross of Sacrifice. This has the words "buried elsewhere in this cemetery" inscribed at the top. |
